FIRST STAGES
First Stages is Studio Theatre Worcester’s artist development initiative, designed to intentionally build pathways into professional theatre for emerging artists and those returning to the field after time away. Rooted in access, mentorship, and hands-on learning, First Stages reflects our belief that strong arts organizations are built by investing in people — creatively, professionally, and structurally.
Through this initiative, Studio Theatre Worcester strengthens the local theatre ecosystem by supporting artists at formative moments in their careers while modeling collaborative, values-driven processes that center growth over product.

playwright-in-residence

Launched as the inaugural component of First Stages, the Playwright-in-Residence program is designed to uplift early-career playwrights and composers by supporting the development of original plays and musicals. Each year, Studio Theatre Worcester selects an emerging writer (or composer/lyricist team) to receive focused developmental support on a new work in progress, concluding in a staged reading.
Through one-on-one dramaturgical support, collaborative workshops, and audience feedback, the annual Playwright-in-Residence is given dedicated time to strengthen their voice and achieve their theatrical vision. By emphasizing process, craftsmanship, and care, the Playwright-in-Residence program teaches artists sustainable creative practices while cultivating new stories for the regional theatre landscape.

boston theatre marathon partnership
First Stages also encompasses Studio Theatre Worcester’s annual participation in the Boston Theatre Marathon, where the company produces a ten-minute play as part of the festival’s celebration of new work. This component of the initiative is intentionally structured to provide practical, professional opportunities for early-career directors and actors.
By placing emerging artists in leadership and collaborative roles, this experience offers participants the chance to hone their skills, build confidence, and gain exposure within the regional theatre community — all while contributing to the creation of new work.

LOOKING AHEAD
First Stages is designed as a living initiative that will evolve alongside the organization’s growth. Studio Theatre Worcester remains committed to expanding its programs to include new pathways for theatre artists, production team members, and administrators. Future iterations may offer opportunities in design, stage management, technical production, arts administration, and leadership development — recognizing that sustainable and equitable theatre requires investing in early-career practitioners and artistic leaders.
First Stages embodies Studio Theatre Worcester’s long-term commitment to artistic development, equitable practice, and community investment. By supporting emerging artists with intention and care, Studio Theatre Worcester helps cultivate a resilient, inclusive, and human-centered theatre community – one where diverse voices and new leadership will continue to shape the future of arts in Worcester and beyond.
